Roleplay terms:

  • RP – Meaning roleplay. Roleplaying is to act and speak as if you are the character you're portraying. To roleplay is as much about what not to say as what TO say. It means to keep your speech in the context of the setting in which your character (or avatar) exists. Context can be defined as both time and place.  Most roleplaying that occurs is in an online setting, such as an online game, a chat room, or a message board.

  • RPG — Roleplay Game/Group.

  • Character – The made-up personality played by the player.

  • Player – The person doing the typing.

  • Storylines – Stories that are written by the players using their characters. Sometimes, the player who started the storyline has a specific plot in mind, sometimes not.

  • IC- In roleplaying, short for In-Character. If you are IC, that means you are pretending to be someone else (your character) rather than being yourself.

  • OOC-  In roleplay when a person wants to step outside of their character for a minute and speak as themselves. When RPing and you want to say something OOC, either put (( )) around it or use this to make strikethrough text.

  • RL – Short for 'Real Life'. Also known as IRL (In real life).

  • AFK- Short for ‘Away from keyboard’

  • BIC – Short for ‘Back In Character’. Used when players are finished talking to each other behind the scenes and talking as their characters again.

  • AU — Alternate Universe. The world that strays from the canon either slightly or entirely.

  • Mainverse — The main universe in which the character is played.

  • Godmodding — A character whose abilities are limitless. Often acts of forcibly causing something to happen, i.e. making someone else’s character move without consent, is godmodding. This is strictly prohibited here, and doing so will result in one warning. Failing to listen to that will result in being banned from the roleplay.

  • Canon — Another word for official. Something comfirmed by the creators of a particular media.

  • Headcanon — a particular belief which has not been used in the universe of whatever program or story they follow, but seems to make sense to that particular individual, and as such is adopted as a sort of "personal canon". Headcanon may be upgraded to canon if it is incorporated into the program or story's universe.

  • Mary Sue — Used to describe a character that is often times ‘perfect’ in every way, is capable of upstaging other characters no matter what, they can pick up on any task and master it in no time, etc. Usually a perfected self-insert. Read this amazing guide of recognizing a Mary Sue and what to do if you have one.

  • Mod — The ‘manager’ or person in charge of the roleplay, group, blog, etc.

  • NPC — Non-playable character. This is when the player controls the actions of a character that may not be tied to the story permanently, such as pedestrains, waiters, office workers, etc. These may also be side characters that are tied to the story, though only played and controlled by one player.

  • OC — Original character. Said created character does not belong to the canon cast, but made up by the player.

  • Thread — The collection of posts and responses from the start or continuation of the roleplay.
